The movie that was made in Stanley Tasmania

After leaving Penguin, our next stop was Stanley, a small seaside town

on the NorthWest coast of Tassie.

In 2014, a movie was made from a  novel called

The Light Between Oceans.

The streets were covered in dirt, old signs were put up,

actors & locals in period costume,

horses & carts in the street.



Stanley's other claim to fame is the Nut.

We took the Chair Lift to the top of the Nut sooner than climb it.
Great view from up there at 143 metres.














There are a lot of interesting old houses in Stanley too.




This was the original home of Tasmania's only Prime Minister of Australia

They have a Southern Rock Lobster &
Deep Sea Giant Crab industry





We took a day trip along the Tarkine Drive.
Going down to Arthur River, & the Edge of the World.
We passed through this town to  get there.

We visited Highfield House while in Stanley.
Built in 1832-1835
It was the residence of a Chief Agent of the
Van Diemens Land Company & the first settlement
in NorthWest Tasmania.

Beautifully restored inside, but ongoing.

















Our last day at Stanley we saw the cars come in from the
Targa North West car rally.
Some old cars, & some pretty flash new cars, about 45 in all.

Church in the town of Penguin

Been in Tassie 9 weeks now, & still loving it. Despite the 

roads being narrow, & steep, the multiple hairpin bends,

the very changeable weather conditions.

There's so much to like here, the mountains, the lakes,

the cool, temperate rainforests, the waterfalls,

the quaint little towns with their interesting history,

and their architecture, and the friendliness of the locals.

While staying in Waratah, we took a day trip to Cradle Mountain.

There is a 12 hr walk & climb up to the top of Cradle Mountain.

We didn't do it!

We did the walk round Dove Lake, & another walk

to a timber chalet built in the 19th Century.

Moving on to Penguin the next day, which is only 80kms away.

There is never a long distance between destinations in Tassie,

just takes a bit longer to get there due to road conditions.

Nice little town Penguin, right on the coast, complete with a Penguin rookery,

hence the name of the town.

The Penguins walk through the Van Park we're in, after dark, 

although haven't seen any yet. Except for this big feller,

but he didn't move.

Nor this one.

Went to a Salsa dance class at Sulphur Creek

the night after we arrived.

We have never done Salsa before, & it was fun.

Teachers Adam & Carrie, great dancers & teachers,

were also very friendly & welcoming,

and also, just the right height!

Took a day trip out to Gunns Plains,

and went down  Gunn's Cave at a constant 11deg.

Summer or Winter.

The cave is home to Freshwater Crayfish,

spiders the size of dinner plates,

snakes, Platypus & glowworms

Only saw a smaller spider, & glowworms, the cave was nice.

Moving on towards Leven Canyon, we were hungry

& found the only eatery out here,

Kaydale Lodge Gardens

Had a great lunch, including a delicious

dessert with mixed berry sorbet & caramel shortcrust tart.

The gardens there were spectacular, over a couple of acres.

Went to a bike show at Ulverstone, just 10k down the road

from us on Saturday.

Some nice Harleys there, and a few Indians.

Caught up with Geoff & Kath, & managed to get a dance

at Devonport RSL,  finally after 6 weeks off the floor

Moving on to Stanley tomorrow. From there, 

we explore as much as we can on the West Coast.
